Spoilt for Choice During Sampling

Flooring is not just flooring. To shed light on the darkness of the countless types of parquet, we made our way to mk-parkett in Leutershausen. The exhibition there offered exactly what we needed: plenty of selection to touch, compare, and sample. What turned the scale, however, was the personal advice. Without the professional input on site, we would have been completely lost in the jungle of materials, gradings, and wood species.

In the end, our choice fell on an engineered oak plank from the Austrian manufacturer Scheucher. Here are the facts about our new floor:

  • Type: SEDA - deeply impregnated oiled parquet floor
  • Color Tone: Perla (medium-light color tone without any yellow cast)
  • Grading: Country (lively, with natural variations in color and structure, visible knots, and occasional, cleanly filled small cracks)
  • Dimensions: Each plank measures 2.2 meters in length, 18.2 centimeters in width, and has a solid thickness of 1.4 centimeters.

Budget Pain: Saying Goodbye to Herringbone Parquet

Part of the truth of our building project is also: we have to set priorities. Originally, we wanted a classic herringbone parquet, which Scheucher also had in its range in the exact same color. However, a look at the already highly strained overall budget forced us to rethink.

The extra effort required for the significantly more complex and extremely time-consuming installation work for the herringbone pattern would have resulted in an additional cost of around 5,000€. A sum that would have been missing elsewhere in the house.

Laying Direction: Maximizing the Sense of Space

To create an elegant and spacious feel, we decided on a strict approach: the flooring runs completely uniformly across both floors – without any change of material, without any changes of direction.

The planks were laid lengthwise along the longer side of the room in the open-plan living area on the ground floor. This has a side effect for the future: the installation direction runs exactly parallel to the subsequent transition outside to the loggia and the terrace. When these areas are later covered with WPC or wooden decking, it will create a visual alignment that seamlessly extends the interior space to the outdoors.

Baseboards and Details

We had to calculate carefully not only for the main surface area but also for the details. Initially, a delicate, almost invisible minileiste was planned as the wall finish. The cost for this: around 3,000€ extra. Here, too, reason prevailed. Instead, classic, simple, square veneered baseboards in white were used. We might eventually replace this detail ourselves at a later date.

Doormat in the Entrance Area

In the entrance area, the flooring was precisely cut out to recess a doormat flush with the floor. No slipping, no tripping hazard.

Floor Box for Power and Network in the Office

The floor box in the office was concealed by the floor layer. The hatch was precisely covered with the oak parquet so that the lively pattern continues almost invisibly.

Parquet with floor box for electric plugs and network connections
Almost invisible when closed: the floor box in the middle of the room which provides sockets for electricity and wired network connections.
